Einherjer – warriors who were selected by the valkyries to fall in battle. Hereafter, they were taken to Valhalla for an afterlife in luxury. In Valhalla, their arms were given back to them, and they made a show of fighting each other – as dying was no longer an option. Between the pretend battles, the warriors feasted at the longtables and had valkyries wait on them with mead and boiled pork shoulder. With an infinite amount of mead and pork available, the Norse notion of a warrior’s afterlife was complete; mead was considered a nectar of the Gods while the meat came from the mythical pig Særimner. Særimner was able to perpetually regenerate, thus providing an infinite amount of meat for the ‘einherjer’.
