Høvding – the formal leader of a community (a chieftain). The Norse word is derived from hofuð (head). This position was most often passed on from father to son, but a ’høvding’ could also be elected or appointed. During paganism, a ’høvding’ could also be the spiritual leader of a ’blót’. Being both the secular and the spiritual leader was a powerful position
