“TØK”

Tøk (or Tak): an old female giant – a ’gyge’ – who plays a pivotal role in the myth of Balder’s death. Tøk was the only one in the whole world who did not shed any tears for Balder: ”Tøk will look dry-eyed at Balder’s cremation”. Because of Tøk and her dry eyes, Balder was not allowed to return from the land of the dead. After Balder’s cremation, Tøk hid in a cage and it seems to be no coincidence that the sly Loke shortly thereafter is punished by being chained in another cage with snake venom dripping into his eyes. It is assumed, that Loke was disguised as the old woman.
