Vætte – a supernatural being with magic and sacred powers. According to the Norse sources, instances of conflict between two types of sacred powers are mentioned in connection with Northeners settling on Iceland. Carefully carved ship sterns had to be removed in order not to collide with the powers of the ’vætter’ from the otherwise uninhabitated country.
