”Viking” – one theory puts forward the idea that the word ‘viking’ stems from the same origin as the Norse word ‘via’ – a ’sea mile’ which original meaning is the ‘distance between two rowing teams’. A possible meaning of the Norse feminine noun ‘víking’ is a voyage with alternating teams of rowers; and thereby supposedly referring to a somewhat longer sea passage before the impact of the sails became seminal. Along this line of thinking, the masculine noun ‘víkingr’ is one of the seamen on these long passages with the alternating teams of rowers.
‘To go viking’ was a verb meaning to leave for longer sea journeys.
