“GJALL”

Gjall – in Norse mythology, the land of the dead, Hel, was encircled by the river Gjall. Gjall thus served as a natural border between  the land of the living and the land of the dead. Souls on their way to the underworld had to cross ’Gjallerbroen’ (the Gjaller Bridge) on their way to Hel. The bridge was guarded by a young woman; Modgunn.
