“SIGURD FAFNERSBANE”

Sigurd Fafnersbane – a hero with two magical aids; a horse and a sword. His horse Grane is a descendant of Odin’s Sleipner, and is able to carry extraordinary loads. Sigurd’s foster father Regin encourages him to slay the dragon Fafner with his sword Gram. Fafner has stolen a gold treasure. After the slaying of Fafner, Sigurd eats the dragon’s heart and thus becomes able to understand the language of birds. Birds inform him of Regin’s plans to kill him. Sigurd chops off Regin’s head, and takes home the gold treasure on Grane’s strong back.
